2000-2004

2000

We heard about Aura more or less accidentally, s/y Anna-Maria by that time. It was for sale on a Viapori Tuoppi (wooden boat sailing competition) info letter late 2000, but no-one seemed to be interested in it. Whatever was the reason, we had a possibility to buy Aura late in the summer of 2000. (Olli Voima and Hannu Peltonen)
Auran uudeksi kotisatamaksi tuli HTPS, Helsingin Työväen Pursiseura Pyysaareessa, Helsingin Laajasalossa. s/y Aura in 2000 when Olli Voima ja Hannu Peltonen bought her.Olli ”testing” the main cabin. The name of the boat was then s/y Anna-Maria.The pantry, Aura's kitchen from the outside.
The pantry from the inside. Olli and Hannu changed the name of the boat back the original s/y Aura. Here Aura is in the archipelago of Porvoo. With Olli and Hannu the new home harbour of Aura was HTPS, Helsinki (Pyysaari). Here is Aura on its way to Porvoo.Aura at the Lindgren boat yard at Ouritsaari in the autumn of 2000.
A tent construction similar to a small house project was raised around Aura which surprisingly hold out against the burden of the winter quite nicely. Aura has got a canvas on its head and is ready to spend the winter in Oiritsaari. At the boat yard before the cover up.

2001

An enthusiastic and happy owner (1979-2006) Hannu Peltonen in the spring 2001. The boat is going into the sea and the letters of brass and be seen. The crane at Ouritsaari ("daddy-longlegs?"), a machine like a crane for containers, steady lifts the boats into the sea and then again in the fall out of it. The crane of Ouritsaari. The first longer trip of the summer 2001 was made to Pellinki and by Loviisa to Kaunissaari in Kotka. These pictures are from the archipelago seaport of HTPS in Pursiniemi, Pellinki. There were severe thunder storms in the eastern archipelago almost for a week. Here we have tighten the mooring ropes and added a few fenders. The night before the gusts were about 30-33 meters/s, which resulted in the fact that Aura rested against the boat next to us, with eight fenders in between, but still all the supporting stanchions on the starboard side got twisted. The boat heeled about 30 degrees in the harbour based on only the windload of the mast.
A few boats came loose from their moorings al together.

We got new mattresses in the fore cabin and the salong as well, and got also new shelves for glasses and plates. We removed all windows and made better insulation. White and plastic dorade ventils were changed to bronze ones, and the same thing we did for water taps. Probably the most visible thing was to change dark wooden nameplate on the back to bronze characteristics on white background.

2002

In the fall of 2002 we started to work with the keel. The boat carpenter Mika Louhivaara did all the work demanding professional skills. I the fall we planned to replace one (mark! one!) plank under water on the port side. First hole in the bottom. As it happens many times, the work "expanded" to four planks, that meant the two lowest battens on both sides. In the picture the bolts has been removed.
The keel is opened. The new iroko (?) battens were fastened in the end of March. The raw battens were quite impressive length five meters effective width 40 cm and thickness 35-40 mm.In the winter we also remade the waterline, the flat stern sanded down to the wood and the hull was totally repainted in the spring of 2003.The flat stern was yet good? In the end of 2007 it was rebuilt!Repairing some of the frames. The frames originally made from hickory (?) which is known as a very hard material.

2003

Mika Louhivaara did all the work with the new battens and frames. In the picture you can see how 40 years have pressed the frames a few mm upwards from the keel (mother tree). This is quite normal and the hull is fixed to the keel and the keel weight not to the frames. There are three massive wooden keel logs and three keel beams made of steel. The new frames were installed in the middle of March. Some of the frames were cut at the place were they were broken and some were repaired by removing the broken part and replacing the missing part with glue and screws. The frames are made of oak veneer shaped and cemented with epoxy. The new iroko battens were installed in the end of March.
Raakalaudat olivat melkoisen komeat, pituutta noin 5m, hyötyleveyttä n. 40cm ja paksuutta 35-40mm. Reunoissa oli jonkuverran "hötöä" joka luonnollisesti poistettiin. The raw battens were quite impressive length five meters effective width 40 cm and thickness 35-40 mm.The old green waterline was replaced. Preparing for the Viapori race 2003.
Viapori Tuoppi was sailed in unsettled weather and condition, in the beginning quite nice winds, especially with the spinnaker. How do you sheet the genoa with the boom when running downwind?Have to agree that this is a good system. After the Viapori race.

Olli was sailing with friends from the job......and some rumors said they sailed all the way to lighthouse of Harmaja. After the trip Olli was forcefully convinced that the rig works because the limit of 8 knots had been broken... can you disagree with that?Olli steers 2004Olli in the mast
